Staying fit and protecting the environment are set to receive a boost in Burwood thanks to three new cycle paths.

Council received almost $800,000 from the State Government’s Parramatta Road Urban Amenity Improvement Program (PRUIAP) to build the mixed on-road and off-road cycle paths that will link existing recreational areas within Burwood Council and the City of Canada Bay.

Burwood Mayor Cr John Faker said the cycle routes would provide more opportunities for the community to keep fit through walking and cycling as well as provide another “green” transport option.

“These new paths will enable cyclists and pedestrians further opportunities to keep fit while enjoying the beauties Burwood has to offer that we so often miss while driving,” he said.

“They will also allow more people to leave the car at home and stay off public transport as they travel to work and study.”

The cycle routes are: Luke Avenue to Burwood Road via Arthur Street and Meryla Street; Parramatta Road to Burwood Park via Neich Parade; and Short Street to Wangal Park via Acton Street and Monash Parade.

The paths are expected to be completed later this year.

Cr Faker said Council was undertaking a Traffic and Transport study, after which it would review Burwood’s cycleways to determine where additional links were needed.

“We will then look at other possible funding opportunities from Transport for NSW Walking and Cycling Programs,” he said.
