Local businesses honoured

A collective of longstanding and diverse Burwood businesses had plenty of stories to tell as they were recently feted at the Inaugural Mayor’s Business Commendation Awards in a special ceremony.
The awards were presented at an event which celebrated NSW Small Business Month and doubled as a networking evening, allowing all local businesses to come together and learn what support is on offer to help their operations thrive.
Ten businesses were recognised for their significant contributions to the local community with honours being given for 40, 25, and 10 years of trading with the Burwood Local Government Area.
These 10 businesses have all made a difference in their own unique way. Some have kept the community fed with their dazzlingly variety of menus, others have provided legal advice, financial advice or medical treatment. Some sold goods while others kept the community informed.
What they all had in common however was their commitment to the community and a passion for excellence in business.
With so many years of experience in the one room there were a number of fascinating insights into the changing nature of Burwood and its surrounds.
Leung Tim Choppers Company who were established in 1995 reflected on the growth potential of the area.
“Burwood has transformed into a cosmopolitan suburb and has attracted an increased number of businesses and residents in the past 25 years and more. It has become a truly multicultural community in the Inner West and is a reflection of modern Australian society,” said Monica Leung.
Dr Gareth Ho from Simplybraces Orthodontic Clinic believes it’s the family memories that make Burwood special.
“The facilities and infrastructure are fantastic with Burwood library being my favourite location. I have very fond memories of taking my young kids to the library before its latest transformation and now they still use it for study while at university.”
It’s a long way from the laundry room of a Homebush West address, but Universal Lawyers founder Quinones has fallen in love with the heritage and architecture of the community.
“Burwood is vibrant and colourful and has soul and depth and is full of old world classical charm. When a beautiful old heritage building in Burleigh Street that was previously used as a police station became available in 2016 I decided to move and have been working from there ever since,” she said.
Mayor John Faker said the Awards was a great way for Council to honour local businesses.
“It's never been more important to honour small businesses and highlight how much they mean to our area. These awards recognise and celebrate businesses that have stood the test of time,” Cr Faker said.
“It is an honour to recognise these businesses and their owners many who have lived, worked, and contributed to Burwood for many years, and I am proud to have established these awards,” he concluded.
