Launch of new colourful pedestrian hub in Burwood

Burwood Council is pleased to unveil the Deane Street Precinct Transformation Project, the newest pedestrian hub in the heart of our town centre.

Deane Street Burwood has long been known for its mixed use and concentration of activities during all hours of the day and night. The space boasts opportunities for local employment, education, cafes, restaurants, retail, recreation and cultural activity.

In February 2022 Burwood Council submitted a $500,000 funding application to the Department of Planning and Environment as part of the Streets as Shared Spaces Round 2 Program to reimagine the Deane Street Precinct.

Since then, Council has worked tirelessly to bring this space to life.

“I am thrilled to see Deane Street reach its full potential,” said Mayor of Burwood Cr. John Faker. “Already a busy and exciting hub of activity, it’s fantastic to see Council take advantage of this funding opportunity to transform Deane Street into the colourful and functional space it is now.”

The design and function of the precinct was informed by consultation with residents and the community. Council thanks all those who took the time to have their say.

The site features new seating and shade cover, fresh plants and trees, vibrant public art, a new bike repair kiosk, and reallocated road space enabling increased pedestrian and cyclist access.

“This updated precinct will facilitate and encourage community interaction, socialising, dining and recreation and seeks to fulfil a broad range of social, economic, health and environmental needs for our community,” said Mayor Faker.

After an exciting soft opening event in November, the Deane Street Precinct was officially launched on Wednesday 14 December.

This project is proudly funded by the NSW Department of Planning and Environment Streets as Shared Spaces Round 2 Program.
