Our area has represented connection for thousands of years, since the Eora and Darug Peoples travelled what is now Parramatta Road to collect resources and meet for social and ceremonial gatherings.

Now, Burwood LGA sits on Wangal Country and is home to one of the most diverse local government areas in NSW!

57% of our residents were born overseas and 62% speak a language other than English at home; we share an incredible variety of religious beliefs, languages, ancestries and values.

All together, we make Burwood LGA an area rich with culture and diversity!

This Harmony Week, hear the stories of some of our residents, and why they chose to make a home in Burwood.

Mohammed

"I have lived in Enfield since moving here from Egypt in 1985," says Mohamed.

"Burwood has always been friendly, but not as diverse and alive as it is now."

Mohammed's biggest impression of Burwood: it is family-friendly.

"My kids love it! Burwood has all the facilities we need, like public schools, Henley Park, and Enfield Aquatic Centre.

"My kids have told me not to sell the family home because they will always love to come and visit and spend time here."

Mohammed loves how many cultures there are in Burwood, especially the foods they bring!

"Chinese, Lebanese, Korean - there is such a good variety of different foods."

"When you walk in Burwood, you feel like you belong."

Alice loves how multicultural Burwood is.

"Everyone is open-minded here - we have different cultures and religions. Burwood has a welcoming feel."

"We've got parks, playgrounds, a great library, and the Enfield Aquatic Centre. It's a very liveable environment."

Like Mohammed, Alice enjoys all the different food choices!

Coming from an Italian background, Tilly grew up locally in Ashbury and moved to Croydon Park in 2018.

"People are lovely in this neighbourhood. You go for a walk in the park, and people stop and say hello.

"It's a nice community. Neighbours are looking out for each other."

Tilly loves all of Burwood's parks and the Enfield Aquatic Centre, particularly in Summer.

"I love going out for a walk even when it's 9pm! It feels safe."

Like most people, Tilly is attracted to how multicultural Burwood is.

"There are lots of programs here catering to different cultural backgrounds, and people with language barriers."

"I feel welcome wherever we go. Our daycare is so friendly, and our kids have made so many friends."

Jeba has visited Singapore and many other countries, but decided to settle here in Burwood.

"There is such a variety of food here - Nepalese and Indian, dumplings, sushi..."

"I love that all cultures are celebrated. It feels so inclusive, with the whole community celebrating occasions like Diwali together."
